Doris Kessler, 68. Her father repaired televisions on the square in Mason and sat her at his workbench at six years old. She set her first two hives at thirty and built her first string of bee lights the same summer, at his bench, with the same soldering gun she uses today. Close to three thousand of them since — given away, or handed across her honey table on a Saturday for whatever people pushed into her hand. She never advertised one. This is the last of them. She leaves the place at the end of the month.

Every Joint Set by Hand and Sealed on Its Own
There is a connection behind every single bee on the string. On a factory run, each one is made by somebody paid by the hour, at speed, and sealed — if at all — by machine. That is where a bought string dies: one wet winter finds one bad joint, and half the run goes dark. Doris sets hers sitting down and seals each one separately. “Mine were made sitting down,” she says. “The difference is I don’t hurry the joints.”
Warm Amber, Not the Hard Blue-White
Most solar strings on a shelf burn a cold blue-white, because blue-heavy LEDs are cheaper and read as “brighter” under shop lighting. In a garden they make the place look like a parking lot. Doris pulled hers all the way to the warm end — the color of a hive at dusk, or of amber held up against a lamp. The bodies glow rather than glare, and from across a yard a fence reads as a swarm at rest instead of a row of bulbs.
Dusk to Daylight, Not Dusk to Ten
“You sit out on a summer evening in this country until eleven, twelve. What good is a light that’s asleep before you are?” So she stopped compromising on the two parts nobody bothers with: the largest panel that fits the head, and the largest cell that fits behind it. A full day of sun puts eight to thirteen hours in it, against the five or six you get from a shelf string. It is still on when you let the dog out.

“Almost every solar string that fails does so for one of three reasons, and all three are cost decisions made before the thing was ever built. The first is the panel: a small polycrystalline cell converts roughly thirteen percent of what lands on it, where a monocrystalline of the same footprint gets you closer to nineteen. The second is storage — a 600 mAh cell simply cannot hold an evening, so the string dies around ten whatever the panel does. The third, and the one nobody sees, is the joints. On a machine run they are made fast and sealed inconsistently, and moisture only needs to find one of them. That is why a shelf string is bright in June and dark by October. Oversize the panel, oversize the cell, seal every joint individually, and there is very little left in the design that can fail.”

Every order is one complete string with its own solar head and ground stake. You choose the size, and the size is counted in bees: 20 bees for a doorway, a window box, a single shrub or a balcony rail · 30 bees for a porch rail, a garden bench, an arbour or a small tree · 50 bees for a whole fence line, a hedge or a pergola.
Pick by what you want to light, not by the run. Bee lights want a little slack between fixing points — a string pulled tight looks like cabling, and a string with a gentle dip between posts looks like bees. If you are between two sizes, take the larger one and let it hang looser. Nobody has ever regretted a bit more of it.
And the head has to see the sky. The stake goes wherever the sun actually lands for most of the day, and it does not have to sit next to where the lights hang. A head tucked into the shade of the same hedge it is lighting is far and away the most common reason somebody thinks a solar string is faulty.

Small variations — in how the bees sit on the lead, in the exact spacing between them, in the finish of a sealed joint — are a natural part of work done one at a time at a bench. No two strings come off it quite alike, and that is by design rather than by accident. Strings arrive coiled, so expect a few kinks: hang them loosely, leave them a day, and they settle out on their own. Give the head a full day in the sun before you judge the first evening — a cell that has been sitting in a box wants one good charge before it does its proper hours. None of this is a fault. It is the maker’s hand at work — thirty-eight years of it.
